Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam on Tuesday said the State government will initiate action against five private hospitals in Kancheepuram district for not conducting medical check-up camps under the Chief Minister Kalaignar Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatments.
Mr. Panneerselvam was taking part in a function at Chromepet to give away identity cards to beneficiaries of the scheme in the Pallavaram Municipality and also to hand over certificates to hospitals that had contributed to the success of the scheme.
He said there were 26 private medical college hospitals in Kancheepuram district.
Mr. Panneerselvam said Balaji, Savitha and Meenakshi Medical College and Hospitals and two other new institutions had not conducted any camp for the benefit of local residents.
Turning to V.K.Subburaj, Principal Health Secretary, Mr. Panneerselvam said: “I instruct the government to conduct an inspection of these medical colleges and hospitals to ascertain if they have the proper approval, possess land and buildings, facilities to treat patients and adequate strength of doctors and paramedical staff,” he said.
At another function, Mr. Panneerselvam dedicated additional facilities of Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet, including the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetrics and New Born Care centre.
The centre has been established at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh to take care of increasing institutional deliveries at this Taluk Headquarters hospital. He said the State government would soon be introducing free mortuary vans to transport bodies, including unclaimed ones, from government hospitals to their respective homes or cremation sheds and burial grounds.
