More than 40 main roads in the city, including Santhome High Road and Sardar Patel Road, will soon be taken up for widening. The process will include land acquisition and demolition.

The Corporation Council on Friday passed a resolution for widening of city roads by acquisition of private property. Preparation of land plan schedule for the purpose of acquisition along 10 roads will commence shortly.

Santhome High Road will have a width of 24 metres after widening. The existing width of the road is 18 metres. Private land on either sides of the 1.6-km stretch will be acquired.

After widening, Sardar Patel Salai will have a width of 30.5 metres. The width of the 3.2-km road is 24 metres.

L.B. Road and Kalki Krishnamurthy Salai will go from being 24 metres to 30.5 metres wide.

Mosque Lane, Jayaram Street and Kodambakkam Road in Saidapet will have a width of 18 metres after widening.

A notification on this will be made shortly. Transfer of development rights is likely to be used to help land owners affected by the project.

Private agencies will also assist in the preparation of land plan schedule to complete the project on time. The Corporation, Collectorate and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority will initiate measures to ease traffic congestion on narrow stretches.

More stretches, in addition to the 41 roads, will be identified for widening, soon.

A study on narrow stretches will be undertaken in all the 15 zones. Based on the study on bottlenecks to traffic flow, a decision is expected in a few months.

The State government will take the final decision on widening of the stretches.

The Corporation council also passed a resolution on short-term tenders for road works in some of the 10,000 stretches announced a few months ago.
