A 38-year-old man committed suicide by jumping into the Cooum near Chintadripet on Sunday morning.

As of 9.30 .m. , the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service (TNFRS) personnel had not retrieved the body.

According to police, the victim Dass, his wife and four daughters used to reside in Pudupet. Dass was an alcoholic and was undergoing treatment. He was a daily wage earner and was without work for the past two months.

Due to various reasons he was mentally stressed. On Sunday, at around 9 a.m., he ran from his house and jumped into the Cooum, near Chintadripet. Residents who witnessed this, tried to save him, but could not find the body. They immediately called the TNFRS.

The rescue operations started at around 10 a.m. “Three officers and 20 personnel were part of the operation. Using two boats they searched for the corpse. But they were not able to find it till night,” said a TNFRS personnel.
