A 36-year-old woman was found murdered at her home in the first floor of a two-storeyed building in Muthamil Nagar, Kodungaiyur on Tuesday.

According to police, the woman was found naked, but her jewellery was intact, ruling out the possibility of a murder for gain.

The victim, S. Pushpalatha, worked at a private textile company in MKB Nagar. She was found by her 10-year-old daughter when she returned from school at around 5 p.m. The victim was on her stomach on the floor of the bedroom, covered by a sari and a mat. Police said she had possibly been smothered by a pillow, but the assailant had also cut her throat.

“Initially, the victim’s daughter thought her mother was sleeping. She lifted the sari and tried to wake her, but as she was unresponsive, the daughter called for help,” said a police officer.

Neighbours informed the Kodungaiyur police, who arrived and combed the house for fingerprints.

On Tuesday, the victim’s daughter, who is in class five, left for school at around 8 a.m.  Her husband, K. Srinivasan left for work half an hour later.

At around 11.30 a.m., Pushpalatha was seen opening her door to a man delivering a gas cylinder, police said.

There were no signs of struggle or injuries on the body, indicating that the perpetrator was probably let into the house, a police officer said.

Nothing had been touched at the house save Pushpalatha’s mobile phone, which was missing, he said.

Police have filed a case of murder.
