30 lakh people will be affected: PT

August 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:53 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Puthiya Tamilagam will stage a protest in Coimbatore on September 3 against the proposed construction of a dam across the Siruvani by Kerala.

“The construction of the dam will affect the livelihood of 30 lakh people. The Kerala government had given up its earlier attempt to construct the dam following strong protest by the political parties in Tamil Nadu,” Puthiya Tamilagam leader K. Krishnasamy told reporters here on Sunday.

He urged the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to put pressure on Kerala and stop it from going ahead with the construction of the dam.

Dr. Krishnasamy also urged that that the local body elections be postponed by three to six months as lot of issues have to be addressed.

“Local body elections are slated to be held in October. However, no clear details are available in terms of wards and wards reserved for women. So, political parties might be unprepared for the elections. The State government should take the views of all parties before announcing the election dates,” he said.
