Three persons, including a baby girl, were killed on the spot and four others injured when a lorry collided with a motorcycle and a share-autorickshaw in Avadi on Tuesday evening.

According to Inspector of Police (Traffic-Investigation) K. Narasimhan, the driver of the lorry lost control after the steering rod of the vehicle broke. He entered the wrong lane and knocked down a motorcycle on which Sundar (35), an employee of Ordnance Factory, his wife Rathikala (29) and daughter Ajitha (3) were travelling. While Sundar and Ajitha succumbed to grievous injuries, Rathikala suffered multiple injuries.

The lorry also hit a share-autorickshaw killing its driver Rahim (23). Three passengers of the share-autorickshaw, including a woman, suffered minor injuries. The cement-laden lorry was going to Avadi from Ambattur.

Mr. Narasimhan said the vehicle would be sent to the Motor Vehicles Inspector for inspection. “We have taken the lorry driver into custody. Rathikala was admitted to a private hospital, where her condition was said to be out of danger,” he added.

The Poonamallee Traffic Investigation Police have registered a case.
