Three members of a family allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at their residence in Surapet near Ambattur on Thursday afternoon. Police said severe debts and the medical condition of a family member led to the trio resorting to the extreme step.

Durai (60), a retired Metrowater employee and his wife Annammal lived in Thulukanathamman Koil Street, Surapet with their daughter Vennila (30) and son Saravanan (25). Some years ago, Saravanan had a road accident and was mentally unstable from then. The family spent lot of money on his treatment and took huge loans but the youth did not respond to treatment. Dejected over this, Durai, Annammal and Vennila consumed pesticide at home on Thursday afternoon. Their relatives rushed them to the Government Kilpauk Hospital but they died on the way.
