Three men were injured, one of them critically, after a portion of a two-storey building under construction collapsed on 3rd Street, Shastri Nagar, Erunkancherry on Friday morning.

MKB Nagar police said the accident took place around 11.30 a.m. when construction workers Ramesh (32) and Srinivasan (33) both from Vyasarpadi, were working on the second floor of the building. The balcony, on which the men were standing and working, collapsed along with a wooden scaffoldings setup, bringing the duo crashing to the ground. The two were injured in the head and arms.

Flying debris fell on the head of a security guard passing that way and he was knocked unconscious. Residents of the area rushed in and took the three men to Government Stanley Hospital where Ramesh and Srinivasan were treated for minor injuries.

The guard, who is yet to be identified, is in a coma and his condition is said to be critical.
