A cyber crime team of the city police on Thursday arrested three men who attempted to float a Knowledge Processing Outsourcing (KPO) firm by stealing data and resources from their employer.

Two men, including the prime suspect, are now on the run while two more of their accomplices are now residing overseas.

According to sources with the Central Crime Branch (CCB), five men, including the apprehended R. Murali (28), Jagadeesh (28) and Gopi Krishna (23), were employees of Rebar Design and Detail Pvt Ltd in Chennai.

“Few months ago the five men, along with their two accomplices in the U.S., planned on starting a new firm by stealing the client information and product details. One suspect who flew to the U.S. on deputation from the company planned it out with two others there and later the men started fraudulently copying the data,” said an investigating officer.

As their employer started losing clients, an internal enquiry was carried out and the five employees were found to be the culprits. Following this, Sekar, assistant manager of the firm, lodged a complaint.

The cyber crime team seized the suspects’ laptops containing some of the stolen data, the officer added.

The police have launched a hunt for two others who are suspected to be in Maharashtra and are likely to seek look out circulars for the suspects residing overseas, CCB sources added.
