Four persons were arrested in connection with crimes involving robbery after breaking open cars and chain snatching.

Three months ago, a group of four people followed a car from Kodungaiyur to Purasawalkam, broke open its window and stole Rs. 53 lakh that was in the vehicle. They had earlier stolen 2.5 kg of silverware from a car parked in front of a clinic in Kilpauk.

The car from which the money was stolen belonged to M. Babu of Srinivasan Nagar, Krishnamurthy Nagar. He had withdrawn the money from a bank in Kodungaiyur and then driven to Purasawalkam to another bank to withdraw some more money which he intended to give his brother M. Madivanan at his company. However, when he emerged from the bank, he saw the car’s window broken open and the money stolen. He then lodged a complaint with the police in Kilpauk.

The police accessed the CCTV footage in the bank in Kodungaiyur and that from a camera in a jewellery shop in Purasawalkam and identified a group of men. Three persons, Kishore alias N. Kishore Kumar (38) of Lakshmi Nagar, Kolathur, B. Pradip (28) of Villivakkam, Kumar alias G. Issac (34) of Rajamanglam, Villivakkam, were arrested and Rs. 44 lakh recovered from them.

A search is on for one more suspect who might be able to help the police recover the rest of the money.

The police also arrested M. Abdul Khadar (37) of Aynavaram who had waylaid and stolen Rs. 1 lakh from R. Gargi on Saravana Perumal Street on November 16. Nine sovereigns of jewellery was also recovered from him

Police arrested three persons and recovered 26 sovereigns of jewellery from them.

Commissioner S. George who handed over the cash and valuables to their respective owners said community policing had made it possible for them to arrest the culprits.
