A special court on Monday sentenced three persons to 10 years of imprisonment in connection with a bomb blast in which a sub-inspector and a constable were injured in the city in 2001.
According to the prosecution, Dharamchand, a real estate businessman, had a dispute with Premchand over disposal of land in Mandaveli. Dharamchand conspired with Jagan, Sundar, Murugan, Anbu, Hussain, and Appu and trespassed into the house of Premchand in Mylapore armed with lethal weapons on June 7, 2001.
When they threatened the members of the house, a sub-inspector along with a constable intercepted them and tried to bring them outside the house. The gang threw country-made bombs with an intention to murder the police officials and fled the place.
During the trial, the special public prosecutor N. Vijayaraj examined 25 witnesses, marked 27 documents and five material objects. Three accused (Jagan, Murugan and Hussian) were declared absconding and Appu died during the trial.
Concluding the hearing, the special judge P. Murugan convicted Sunder, Ambu and Dharamchand for offences under 120(B), 307 of IPC and section 6 of Explosive Substances Act. They were directed to undergo 10 years of imprisonment.
