A 29-year-old man who barged into a house in Punjarasanthangal and attacked a woman was killed in police firing.

According to the police, the incident took place around 1.30 p.m. on Friday when Yuvaraj and his friend Kamalraj (25), both from Pallavarmedu in Kancheepuram, entered the house of Manjula and attacked her.

Hearing her cries for help, neighbours tried to gain entry into the house but found it locked from inside.

An armed reserve policeman, Sundar, who was on escort duty at Manjula’s relative Perumal’s house on the same street rushed to help.

He ordered the intruders to open the door but when they refused to do so, he broke open the doors of the window and pointed his gun at them.

On seeing the policeman, Yuvaraj threatened to kill the woman if denied a safe passage out of the house. However, Sundar opened two rounds of fire at Yuvaraj, who succumbed to a bullet injury sustained on his waist.

Kamalraj was nabbed by the public and handed over to the police.

Manjula, who was hurt in the scuffle, and Kamalraj, who sustained injuries on his head and hand after being roughed up by the public, were rushed to the District Government Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

The Kanchi Taluk Police have registered a case and are investigating.
