A 28-year-old college lecturer died in an accident on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway in Sriperumbudur on Friday evening when a goods carrier hit the motorcycle on which he was travelling pillion.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 4.45 p.m. when the victim, Kumara Pon Selvan, and his student were proceeding towards Tambaram from a private Siddha college in Sriperumpudur. The student, Raghavan (20), who was driving the motorcycle, overlooked the green signal at the Indira Gandhi statue junction on the National Highway and attempted to take a u-turn.
A goods carrier proceeding towards Chennai hit the motorcycle and in the impact, Selvan fell off the two-wheeler and died on the spot. Raghavan sustained minor injuries.
The Sriperumpudur police have registered a case and are investigating.
Selvan is the youngest of three children of T.M. Krishnan and Thamizharasi of Arunatheri village in Paavoor Chathiram, Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district. He was living along with his mother in Mahalakshmi Nagar, Selaiyur, near Tambaram.
His relatives said Selvan had always excelled in academics. Having gained entry into National Institute of Siddha (NIS) on merit, he completed his Masters at the reputed institute in Tambaram Sanatorium. In the recently released results of the group II examinations of Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission conducted for the post of assistant medical officer (Siddha), he secured the third rank at the State level. His parents had been looking for a bride for him, his relatives said.
He had been working as a lecturer at the private Siddha college in Sriperumbudur and was to resign from the post on Saturday. A farewell party was scheduled to be held on Saturday.
Staff at NIS, shocked on receiving the news of Selvan’s demise, described him as a hard-working student. He was very committed to his studies during the course of his three-year masters’ programme, staff members said.
