Revenge killing continued in north Chennai as a 28-year-old autorickshaw driver was hacked to death by a five-member gang in MKB Nagar on Monday.
Later in the day, K. ‘Body’ Saravanan (38), a resident of Vyasarpadi, and L. Gopinath (24) a resident of Korukkupet, surrendered before the Metropolitan Court – VIII in George Town and were remanded to custody at Puzhal prison.
K. Prabhakaran (32), the victim, was a dormant gangster after a murder he was involved in 2007 and an accident a few months later in which his right leg was damaged, the police said. “He was not active after his leg got injured and was doing a few odd jobs, including working as a sweeper, to make a living,” said Govi Monoharan, assistant commissioner of police (MKB Nagar).
Around 11.45 a.m., Prabhakaran was talking to his friend, opposite a TASMAC outlet on the Erukkancheri Main Road when a gang chased and attacked him with lethal weapons.
Suffering serious head injuries, Prabhakaran died on the spot while the gang escaped on bikes. Prabhakaran’s friend (who is yet to be identified), too, fled the scene once the gang started to assault Prabhakaran.
The body was sent to the Stanley Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. A case of murder has been filed by the MKB Nagar police.
Police sources said that Monday’s murder might be a revenge killing by a gang associated with the deceased gangster, K. Kamesh, who was hacked to death on last Saturday at Vyasarpadi by a six-member gang led by Bokka Ravikumar. Prabhakaran was an old associate of Bokka Ravikumar.
Kamesh was murdered because three years ago, he had hacked to death Bokka Ravikumar’s friend, S. Kalaiarasan, over petty issues, the police said.
Monday’s incident was the third such incident in less than a week in north Chennai where personal enimity and revenge are major reasons behind such murders.
