28-year-old booked under Goondas Act

April 10, 2013 11:48 am | Updated 11:48 am IST - CHENNAI:

The city police on Tuesday invoked the provisions of the Goondas Act on a person who allegedly sexually assaulted a girl child in T. Nagar.

The Mambalam police had arrested Shahiz (28) and a juvenile, for sexually assaulting the three-and-a-half-year-old girl and attacking her, three months ago.

According to a press release, a teenager and his employer Shahiz, who runs a garment showroom in T. Nagar, had allegedly assaulted the child when her mother left the girl in the shop. The mother had found her daughter in tears when she returned in the evening. There were visible injuries on her face and other parts of her body.

After the mother took her child to the Government Children’s Hospital in Egmore, doctors too had confirmed sexual assault. Hospital authorities then alerted the police.

A number of NGOs had demanded severe punishment for the two offenders. The Act has been invoked in such a case for the first time in the State, the release said.
