A 24-year-old man was brutally beaten to death near his hut in Chetpet on Sunday night by two men after the former, who was drunk, allegedly teased the sister of one of the assailants. The duo has been apprehended.

The Chetpet police identified the victim as Francis alias Selvaraj, a member of the housekeeping staff at a private firm in Mandaveli and a resident of Appasamy Street in Chetpet.

Selvaraj was an alcoholic and often quarrelled with his wife who recently left him.

Following this, his alcoholism got worse and he had become a menace in the neighbourhood.

A few days ago, Selvaraj made fun of his young neighbour and abused her brother Charles and his uncle Neelankandan when they questioned him.

Enraged by this, the duo intercepted and assaulted Selvaraj around 11.30 p.m. outside his house.

The drunken youth couldn’t withstand the men who brutally attacked him with stones and sticks and threw him on the bed in his house. Selvaraj bled to death.

His wife came to the house on Monday morning and found him dead following which the police were alerted.

The Chetpet police registered a case of murder and arrested Charles and his uncle Neelankandan, sources said.
