In a ceremony hosted at Madras Gymkhana Club, 22-year-old Sathyawageeswar Subramanian was presented The Pemanda Monappa Scholarship (for study in University of Cambridge, U.K) by N. Ravi, Director of Kasturi and Sons and Bharat Joshi, British Deputy High Commissioner, Chennai.
Sathyawageeswar is the sixth recipient of the scholarship. After finishing his schooling in Cochin, he joined Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. At Cambridge, he will pursue Master of Advanced Studies, Part 3 of the Mathematical Tripos. “My love for science started when I was a child when my father taught me to identify the stars in the sky and I got interested in astronomy. In school, I enjoyed my time in the science laboratory,” he says. He is also the recipient of The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) fellowship.
P.M. Belliappa established the Pemanda Monappa Scholarship Fund in 2010, in memory of his father. The scholarship is given to a deserving student who has finished under-graduation from a recognised university in South India and has got admission in Cambridge.
Sathyawageeswar was presented the scholarship in the presence of his family and well wishers. Inspired by late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the event began with a slide show of photos of Dr Kalam, tracing his incredible journey. Mr. N. Ravi congratulated the winner and appreciated the efforts of Mr Belliappa. He also spoke about India’s relationship with the prestigious university.
