A 20 per cent increase in Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation Ltd’s (TANCEM) production in the last few months, due to the introduction of quality movements, has given birth to a new brand ‘Super Star.’

TANCEM has started selling about 1 lakh tonnes of ‘Super Star’ cement in the open market in 22 districts through authorised stockists for Rs.200 per bag. Currently, TANCEM’s entire production is used by government department for various projects.

“So far, we were producing annually around 6 lakh tonnes of cement. After the implementation of Total Preventive Maintenance and Total Quality Management in Ariyalur and Alangulam, the cement production has increased. It is likely to be more in the coming months,” M. Rajaram, TANCEM Managing Director told The Hindu.

TANCEM recently joined hands with Lucas-TVS and Anna University and had formed 14 Quality Circles in Ariyalur, Alangulam and Vridhachalam. The main aim was to improve productivity and performance, minimise wastages and breakdowns and reduce losses through the introduction of just-in-time concept.

“Within a short span of time we were able to bring about quality changes in the employees’ behaviour. The employees have understood the concept and are meeting every week to take the organisation forward,” Mr. Rajaram said.

According to him, the cement will be available at Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari, Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karur, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Salem, Namakkal, Erode and Coimbatore.
