With the city police all set to open two-way traffic on the arterial roads of Anna Nagar from Thursday following the completion of a section of Metro Rail work, residents of the area can heave a huge sigh of relief.
The work commenced on Second Avenue in 2011. Over the years, the traffic police introduced several diversions in the area.
Only one-way traffic was allowed on 13th Main Road, the stretch between Second Avenue junction and Anna Nagar Roundtana, and Third Avenue of Shanthi Colony.
The city police said, “As the construction work is complete, two-way traffic will be introduced on Anna Nagar Second Avenue, Shanthi Colony, Third Avenue, 13th Main Road, from Anna Nagar Roundtana to Chinthamani from Thursday.”
Officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said they had nearly completed all the procedures for throwing open the roads for two-way traffic.
“The remaining road space we took for construction will also be cleared for traffic,” an official said.
Some work remains with regard to fixing of BSNL cables but officials said this would be finished soon as well.
Residents are a relieved lot. P. Vadivel, a 67-year-old resident of Anna Nagar, said, “We have been waiting for a long time. The last five years have been extremely difficult for anyone trying to enter or leave Anna Nagar. Now, travel time will come down by half.”
