A multi-level parking facility each in Velachery and Anna Nagar East is on the anvil as part of the measures to ease congestion in the two areas, which are emerging as major commercial centres.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and Chennai Corporation would commence a feasibility study on the facilities proposed at the MTC bus terminus on Third Avenue in Anna Nagar East and at the Vijay Nagar bus terminus in Velachery.
The proposal for setting up the two multi-level parking lots have been part of the Chennai Comprehensive Transportation Study. However, the lack of coordination among the various land-owning departments and the planning agencies has been a stumbling block for the implementation of such projects.
At a recent meeting on multi-level parking, CMDA and the Corporation decided to conduct a new traffic study at the two localities to facilitate implementation of the project.
The projects would be implemented either by the CMDA or by land-owning government agencies.
The area of the MTC bus terminus in Anna Nagar East is around 5,000 sq metre and the proposed facility would accommodate at least 100 cars and 200 two wheelers without affecting the existing terminus.
The facility would relieve congestion on the main roads of Anna Nagar, where haphazard parking continues to be a problem during rush hour.
The multi-level parking lot in Velachery is likely to require land acquisition near the bus stand.
The facility would also accommodate 100 cars and 200 two-wheelers. It too would have 5,000 sq m commercial space.
