Eighteen persons from Nagapattinam were injured after the van they were travelling in rammed a stationary MTC bus in Muttukadu on the East Coast Road (ECR) on Sunday morning.

Police said that Anand Kumar (28), the van driver had dozed off just before the vehicle hit the MTC bus 19 H (T. Nagar – Kanathur) at 6 a.m. The injured, including women, were rushed to different private hospitals and one person sustained multiple fractures on his face.

The Adyar traffic investigation police have registered a case.

The 18-member group started from Nagapattinam around 11 p.m. on Saturday and was headed to a relative’s wedding that was to take place in Triplicane on Sunday. “The driver was tired after the overnight journey. The MTC driver had parked the bus on the side of the road and was drinking tea in a nearby shop,” said a police officer. The front portion of the van and rear of the MTC bus was completely damaged. “The driver also sustained injuries,” said the officer.
