A total of 18 cadres belonging to the Naam Tamizhar party were arrested for attempting to attack the Mahabodhi society in Egmore on Sunday morning.

According to the police, over 20 cadres marched towards the society building, situated on Kenneth Lane in Egmore, at 11.50 a.m.

As there were policemen posted at the main gate, they could not barge into building. “There were rumours that they tried to lock the gate,” said a police source.

Seeing the protestors advancing towards the building, the police tried persuading them to leave. But they would not relent and held a demonstration. “After this, one of the cadres threw a stone at the building; no damage occurred out of this,” said a police source.

Senior police officers, however, denied any such attack.

When contacted, the staff at Mahabodhi society too denied they had come under any attack.

The police, however, confirmed that the cadres were arrested and taken to the Egmore police station and remanded.

The Society had come came under attack in 2011. “That attack was carried out by Dravida Viduthalai Kazhagam. Some monks were injured,” said a police officer.
