A 17-year old judo player drowned in the sea behind the Marina swimming pool on Monday afternoon.

According to the police, Sunny, son of Mangal Singh, was a resident of Amritsar. A few days ago, he and 24 of his friends had come to Pondicherry for a sports meet. After the event, they travelled to Chennai and arrived around 11.30 a.m. on Monday.

They were supposed to board a train at 7 p.m. to travel back to Punjab. “Since they had a lot of time on hand, they decided to travel around the city. Around 1 p.m., they reached the Marina beach,” said a police officer attached to the Anna Square police station.

He said, while some of the team members were playing in the sea, the others were busy taking pictures. “Sunny was among those playing in the water. All of a sudden, a huge wave dragged him down and he drowned. His body was retrieved within the next half an hour,” said the officer.

His friends had taken the body to his hometown after a post-mortem was conducted, said the officer.
