A 17-year-old schoolgirl fell from the fourth floor of a school building to the second floor of an adjacent building on Friday, and sustained injuries.
The accident took place at the Terapanth Jain Vidyalaya School on Vadamalai Street in Sowcarpet in north Chennai, on the day that the school had re-opened after mid-term examinations.
The police said that around noon, during the lunch break, R. Shruthi, a commerce student, had attempted to retrieve a handkerchief fallen on the sun shade. As the side wall was four-feet high, she stood on a dustbin and while leaning over, slipped and fell to the second floor of the adjacent building.
Students and teachers heard a noise and rushed to the building where they found Shruthi with bleeding injuries.
School authorities, led by the headmistress, along with a few students rushed Shruthi to the Apollo Hospital on Mint street in Sowcarpet.
However, when she continued to bleed, doctors at the hospital referred Shruthi to the Apollo Hospital at Teynampet, where she was admitted at the Critical Care Unit (CCU) in the emergency ward of the hospital, two hours after the incident.
“I got the information around 12.30 p.m. from my brother as we (me and my wife) were attending a puja at a Jain function in Poonamallee. My daughter is a very active and bright child,” said Shruthi’s father S. Rajesh.
Doctors at the Apollo Hospitals in Teynampet said Shruti, who had sustained a fracture in her right leg, was out of danger but had to be monitored for at least 24 hours.
Seven Wells police have registered a case of ‘accidental fall’.
