Within 15 hours of the murder of a 46-year-old housewife at her residence in Old Washermenpet, police teams cracked the case. Two youths were arrested and over 45 sovereigns of gold, Rs. 15 lakh and other valuables were recovered.
The murder took place at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday when the victim Gyanasoundari was alone in her flat on G.A. Road, 7 Lane. The suspects, P. Suresh (26) of Grace Garden in Royapuram, and his friend Satish Kumar of Thyagarayapuram in Tiruvottiyur, entered the house on the pretext of asking for water to drink.
“Gyanasoundari opened the door for the duo, as Suresh is a friend of her son Dinesh Kumar. As she walked to the refrigerator to get a bottle of water, Suresh killed her by strangling her from behind with a rope which he had brought with him,” said additional commissioner of police (L&O) P. Thamarai Kannan at a press meet at the police commissionerate, on Wednesday evening.
The duo fled with jewellery weighing over 45 sovereigns and Rs. 15 lakh, Mr. Kannan added. The murder for gain came to light only at around 9.30 p.m on Tuesday, when Gyanasoundari’s husband Bhaskar came home after closing his shop in Royapuram.
Six special teams investigating the murder questioned many persons including family members and friends. Suresh and the victim’s son Dinesh were schoolmates. Dinesh started a garment shop, while Suresh worked as a loadman, police sources said.
“Suresh knew that the family had a lot of money and gold at home, and planned to kill Gyanasoundari and rob the house. After two failed attempts, Suresh and Satish struck on Tuesday evening. The duo hid the loot in accomplice Fathima’s (37) house in Tiruvottiyur,” said sub inspector Esakki Pandian.
Suresh and Satish were arrested on Wednesday afternoon and the stolen items, including gold, cash, silver anklets and two wrist watches, were recovered from Fathima’s house. She has also been detained for questioning, sources said.
