An inspection of private school vehicles to check their compliance with the guidelines laid down in the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Rules 2012 was done at the Railway grounds, Tambaram, on Saturday.
Teams comprising the Revenue Divisional Officer, G. Vimalraj, Tambaram RTO G. Venkateswaran and Education Department officials carried out checks of buses and vans operated by schools for ensuring safety of the schoolchildren.
According to Mr. Vimalraj, 14 vehicles were declined fitness certificate (FC) during the check for not meeting the norms and they have been given a week’s time to rectify their defects and come back for inspection once again.
As many as 268 buses from 56 schools within the jurisdiction of RTO-Tambaram came for inspection and 88 vehicles remain to be checked.
Orders issued to schools
Mr. Venkateswaran said, “The other vehicles may be in workshop for maintenance and repairing work. We have issued orders to school managements to bring the vehicles to the RTOs within the next few days for inspection.”
He added that the offence can be mentioned in the report for violations.
The Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Rules 2012 has set guidelines under as many as 16 heads to ensure the safety of private school vehicles.
These will be checked before the start of every academic year and a report will be submitted to the State Transport Department by the end of May.
