13-year-old girl jumps from school building


She jumped from the fourth-floor terrace of her school in Tiruvottiyur

A 13-year-old girl allegedly jumped to death from her school building in Tiruvottiyur on Friday evening in front of her father, who had gone to bring her home

The incident occurred on the campus of Sri Sankara Vidya Kendra Matriculation Higher Secondary on Tiruvottiyur High Road around 5.30 p.m. Vaishnavi Udayakumar, a class VII student of the school, had not returned home and her father Udayakumar went in search of her.

He spotted his daughter standing on the fourth-floor terrace of the school building and shouted out to her to come down.

But a crying Vaishnavi jumped to the ground,” said an officer attached to the Tiruvottiyur police.

He rushed the teenager to a hospital where she succumbed to injuries around 11 p.m. Vaishnavi was a good student and was active in school.

It is not known why she jumped, the officer added. Following the death of the girl, her family members along with relatives and residents staged an hour-long protest outside the school on Saturday evening, demanding police action against the school authorities.
