A total of 122 election observers will arrive here on April 29 to monitor the election process across the State, Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni said on Wednesday.
“They would be coming on April 29 and would remain in the State till the elections are over on May 16,” Mr. Lakhoni said. Meanwhile, the 124 election expenditure observers, who are in the State, would return on April 29.
“But they would come back on May 3 since the final candidates in the fray would be known by then,” he said. Replying to a query, he said though there were searches going on in some places on Wednesday, no money was seized.
In an incident near Salem, a vehicle carrying over 2,000 laptops valued at over Rs. 95 lakh has been detained by officials. “We are in the process of checking if they have valid documents,” he said.
So far, cash to the tune of about Rs. 55 crore and gold coins have been seized by elections and Income Tax Department officials since the poll code came into force on March 4.
