November 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:30 am IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

A young boy drowned in a lake in Thaiyur village near Kelambakkam in the district on Sunday.

Harikrishnan, 10, of Periyapalleri, Thaiyur, had visited the lake with his friends around 9.30 a.m. The lake was filled to the brim following the heavy rain and he is reported to have ventured deep into the lake. Around 10 a.m., when Harikrishnan was not found, his friends raised an alarm.

People living nearby reached the spot along with police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel. His body was retrieved later in the day, police sources said. The body was sent to Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Kancheepuram Collector R. Gajalakshmi urged people to not venture near lakes and tanks that were filled to their brim either to bathe or wash clothes. She appealed to parents of young children to keep a watch on them, who are usually tempted towards such waterbodies.
