September 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 28, 2016 02:36 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The Chennai Corporation is set to plant banyan trees across the city.

As a pilot project, 1,000 banyan trees are expected to be planted for a distance of 10 km in ward 129 of Kodambakkam zone.

“We will conduct a study on the space available for planting such banyan saplings. The zonal officer has been asked to identify space for planting banyan saplings along waterways and playgrounds. The planting of these trees will not affect civic activity in neighbourhoods,” said Mayor Saidai Duraisamy.

According to V. Senthilpandi, councillor of ward 129, the saplings will be planted on roads, playgrounds and schools. “The Corporation should find private players to help maintain the trees for three years,” he said.

The civic body has already planted lakhs of Palmyra trees along waterways. It has also distributed nochi and papaya saplings to homes to improve public health of residents.
