Stressing on the need to implement agricultural practices that ensured sustainable growth, Karthikeya Sivasenapathy, managing trustee of the Senapathy Kangayam Cattle Research Foundation, said that livestock-based farming systems had a big role to play in the same.
He was delivering a talk on the ‘Nature of livestock in times of climate change’ at the inaugural of ‘Kurukshetra 2017’, the tech-management fest organised by the CEG Tech Forum of the College of Engineering, Guindy, at Anna University on Wednesday.
“While our ancestors introduced livestock-based farming systems, over the years, the use of chemicals in farming has affected both the farmers in terms of the output they get and the consumers with regard to the harmful produce they are exposed to. While many are saying that livestock shouldn’t be used as much in farming systems, people should understand that there is a difference between livestock used in large-scale industrial farming and free-ranging cattle used in our traditional methods of farming,” he explained.
A. Kannan, chief coordinator of the CEG Tech Forum, said that the tech- management festival had been ISO certified this year and would also include the ‘K! Awards’ for people who had made a difference to society.
The four-day festival, which is powered by The Hindu , has been modelled around the theme of ‘Combating climate change’. It will have 33 events, 12 workshops and various student projects.
“Through the four-day event, we hope to encourage innovation and motivate participants to think out of the box with regard to technology management,” said V. Geetha, Member of the Convener Committee, Anna University.
