Officials of the Tiruvannamalai Municipality on Thursday raided the shops along the “Girivalam” path and seized banned plastic items.

According to officials, the officials carried out raids following an instruction from the Collector. They inspected wholesale shops, markets and temporary outlets from Anna Arch to Yama Lingam along the Girivalam path in the temple town.

The team comprising health officer S. Vinothkumar and sanitary inspectors seized plastic bags below thickness of 50 microns, plastic and thermocol cups from these shops. They seized a total of 150 kg of items and destroyed them. The officials also collected a fine of ₹10,000 from the shopkeepers for the violations.

Inspections would be held on a regular basis to prevent use of the banned plastic items, they added.
