Youth in suicide pact run over by train, girl escapes

A suicide pact between a couple ended with the young man being run over by a train, while the girl escaped.

According to the police, Renuka Prasad (20), was in love with a 15-year-old girl. However, their families — both from Motaganahalli in Magadi taluk — disapproved of the relationship. The couple decided to run away from home and came to Bidadi on Sunday.

That night, they ordered a meal at a nearby hotel, in which they allegedly mixed rat poison. This, police said, wasn’t the first time they attempted to end their lives. And like the January 2 bid, the poison too did not have the effect the couple wanted. So, they decided to end their lives by lying on the railway track at Kengeri railway station.

A passenger train from Mysore was entering the city around 11.30 p.m. As the sound of the train grew louder, the girl reconsidered and ran away from the path of the train, even as Renuka Prasad was crushed to death, the police said.

Local people, who heard the girl’s cries, rushed her to Rajarajeshwari medical hospital, where she is being treated.

A case has been registered with the railway police.
