The police arrested an 18-year-old youth for allegedly attempting to rape an eight-year-old girl in a ground near the Banaswadi railway gate in Fraser Town here on Sunday evening.

The accused was handed over to the Pulikeshinagar police after being beaten up by passersby.

The incident was first noticed by local residents living nearby who said that the youth was “harassing” the girl.

Meanwhile, people who spotted the mob beating up the youth called the police who rushed to the spot. After making enquiries with the crowd, the police took the youth into custody for questioning.

The girl is the daughter of a family of construction labourers from Yadgir. The accused, Ismail, is a manual labourer from Yadgir as well.

Both the girl and the accused were taken for medical examination at the Baptist Hospital, the police said.

The Pulikeshinagar police have registered a case of attempt to rape against the youth.

However, they said that they are awaiting the medical report from the hospital.

Chain snatched

Two motorcycle-borne men snatched a gold chain valued at Rs. 1 lakh from a woman in Vivek Nagar here on Saturday night.

The victim, S. Geetha, was going to her relative’s house when the two men snatched the gold chain from her and fled.

Though Geetha raised an alarm, the men managed to escape before help could reach her.

The Vivek Nagar police have registered a case.
