A 23-year-old woman was smothered allegedly by her husband while she was asleep at their residence in Shivanandanagar in J.P. Nagar police station limits on Friday night.

The police said flower vendor Venkatesh (29), who married Pushpa two-and-a-half years ago, was diagnosed with brain tumour six months ago and had undergone treatment. According to the police, Venkatesh’s mother claimed that he was mentally disturbed ever since the diagnosis. Venkatesh had left home about a month ago and had returned only a few days back.

On Friday night, Venkatesh allegedly attacked his wife with an iron rod, and later smothered her with a pillow. He slept next to the body through the night. The incident came to light in the morning.

Meanwhile, Pushpa’s mother, Narayanamma, and her brothers Manjunath and Shanthakumar have filed a complaint of dowry harassment against Venkatesh and his family with the J.P. Nagar police.
