A couple that migrated to the city from Odisha a few days ago to work as construction workers committed suicide by setting themselves ablaze in Rambhavi Colony in Jalahalli on Tuesday.
The police identified them as Babu Jan (25) and Bayani (22).
They were working at the construction site of a water tank, taken up by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, three days ago.
Preliminary enquiry found that the couple fell in love and had got married against their parents’ wishes.
New life
They had come here to start a new life, the police said.
The tragedy came to light when neighbours noticed smoke and screams coming from the house.
The two were rushed to a hospital nearby but it was too late.
The police said that the couple may have tried to hang themselves but appeared to have failed as a snapped rope was found in their house.
They suspected that the couple was nervous about the parents tracking them down.
The police have informed their families.
