Residents of areas in and around Yelahanka and Sahakarnagar will be hit by intermittent power supply as the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has decided to close the diesel power generating unit at Yelahanka.

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) had issued a show-cause notice to the 20-year-old plant, and had accused it of violating the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. The board officials had alleged that the plant was fuelled by a cheap, polluting Low Sulphur Heavy Stock (LSHS), and not by diesel.

A press release from Bescom on Wednesday said around 40 MW power was being generated at the plant. As a result of the closure of the plant, areas around it would face unscheduled power cuts.

The Bescom release added that measures would be taken to generate power through alternative routes. Among them is to raise around five intermediate towers along the 1.5-km distance between the S.R.S Peenya 220 KV Receiving Station and the Welcast 66 KV Station. The work, which may be completed in two months, would help in generating 20 MW power to the Atturu, Sahakarnagar and KHB stations. The power utility is also planning to replace the conductors used for transmission in these stations with High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) conductors within the next 10 to 12 months to increase the generating capacity from the existing 40 MW.
