Back from a visit to China, Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa favoured a two-child norm suggesting that benefits of government schemes should be denied to parents opting for more—much on the lines of the Chinese model, he said on Wednesday.
Mr. Yeddyurappa called for a debate on implementing such a measure back home.
“There should be a debate to see if one adopted the two-child norm, it helps in more development and population control,” he said in the assembly. The visit to China was an “awakening,” he said.
Farmers appeared very happy in China and the people there were never seen whiling away their time. China did not waste a single drop of water, he said.
Elderly Chinese were active and India has lessons to learn from its neighbour, added Mr. Yeddyurappa. China has adopted a one child norm policy since 1979 to limit its booming population but people in the countryside are allowed to have two.
