Anxious students of two pre-university colleges, worried that their colleges would be shifted, staged a protest on Friday.

The students were protesting after an order was issued to merge the Old Fort Pre-University College with another college in Shivajinagar. The protesters were joined by students of New Fort PU College located in Chamarajpet. The strike was supported by student leaders of the All-India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO).

Speaking out against the order to merge the institutions, students argued that the new premises was far and that their daily commute would increase greatly. However, according to officials, the merging of the college was only an administrative decision taken for convenience and that the order would not result in a change of premises for the students.

C. Shika, Director, Department of Pre-University Education, said students of Old Fort College did not have to worry as they could continue studying on the premises of the New Fort PU College.
