Over 3,000 persons took part in the mass Suryanamaskar on Saturday on the BMS College of Engineering ground in Basavanagudi, as a part of World Yoga Day celebration. The event was organised by the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana jointly with yoga schools across the city.

Participating in the programme, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar, emphasised the need for yoga practice for a healthy and holistic lifestyle. He participated in the 3.5 km walk – Yogathon (Yoga Nadige) – which passed through Hanumanthanagar, Basavanagudi, and Gandhi Bazaar. Mr. Kumar said he would approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request him to put pressure on the United Nations Organisation to declare June 21 as World Yoga Day.

Mr. Kumar also promised to sanction Rs. 25 lakh from the Member of Parliament Fund for the construction of a yoga hall adjacent to S-VYASA University City Office. A yoga seminar was organised by S-VYASA University on topics such as yoga for health, stress management and ‘yoga as a career’ with eminent speakers from various fields.
