Workers of the construction industry celebrated Labour Day by sweating it out at the games organised by the Confederation of Real Estate Developer’s Associations of India.
Over 600 construction workers put their best foot forward and participated in various competitions such as 100, 200 and 400 metre running, shot put and long jump.
The star of the Labour Day Olympics was 22-year-old Pavitra Mondal, a carpenter with the Brigade Group. Mondal won the 400-metre race effortlessly, amid cheers from his co-workers. Thrilled with all the attention, Mondal, who hails from Kolkata, said, “My employer, who usually gives me instructions regarding work, had asked me to focus on the race. I have exceeded his expectations as I am taking back two medals.”
Twenty-six-year-old Shameen, who works as a housekeeping staff, also drew cheers from the crowd after she won the second prize in the 100-metre race. “I had not practised this year, but when I heard the loud cheering, I was encouraged and did my best,” she said.
While most people were enjoying the well-deserved break, Yamakhant Yadav from Jharkhand said, “I am used to working and plastering walls in the sun. Our bodies don’t feel good if we don’t work.”
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Joshi felicitated the winners.
