The State Women’s Commission on Saturday sought action against the Vidyaranyapura police, who allegedly tortured Narayanamma and her family members after illegally detaining them for three days.

Narayanamma’s 28-year-old daughter Lakshmi Devi, a domestic help who was detained and questioned by police on June 12, is still missing.

Ms. Narayanamma, who approached the commission, was referred to K.C. General Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission, which took cognisance of the family’s ordeal highlighted in The Hindu, demanded that the police personnel who allegedly tortured the family be suspended. Commissioner of Police Raghavendra Auradkar ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Ms. Devi was detained after her employer accused her of stealing 150 saris. Her parents, Ms. Narayanamma (56) and Obaleshu (60), and brother, Ramesh (25), were allegedly picked up by the police on July 2, illegally detained and tortured for three days.
