A man was beaten up by hundreds of women of self-help groups for cheating them and taken in a procession in a semi-naked state from Mahatma Gandhi stadium to the Superintendent of Police’s office in Tumakuru city on Thursday.

Manjunath of Kyatsandra in Tumakuru city had allegedly cheated hundreds of women by collecting Rs.11,500 from each self-help group and promising them benefits from government schemes and Rs.2 lakh loan from a bank in a week’s time.

He had opened an office of Karnataka Swasahaya Sangagala Okkuta in Batawadi in the city and was collecting money for the past few months. The women alleged that he had collected around Rs.8 crore and had made property using that amount. He was absconding for the past several days but the women found him and brought him to the police.

A woman from Agrahara in the city, Rajeshwari, demanded that the police seize his property and get their amount from Manjunath. A resident of Nrupathunga Layout, Mahalakshmi, told The Hindu , “With great difficulty I had given money to him to get financial benefits from the government but now I am really angry that he has cheated us.”

The women staged a dharna in front of the SP’s office and later took the person to New Extension Police Station to register a case against him. A case was registered and Manjunath was arrested.
