A 62-year-old woman priest was seriously injured after being attacked by a youth on Saturday morning, leading to tension in Yelahanka.

Mira Bai, priest at Amba Bhavani temple in Yelahanka, suffered serious head injuries in the attack. The attacker, 23-year-old Somaranjan Barik from Odisha, approached the victim on the pretext of offering prayers.

Police said that the accused offered fruits and flowers to the priest for the puja and told her that he was waiting for his relatives. However, a few minutes later, he attacked the priest with a stone without any provocation, police said. Mira Bai collapsed. The attack enraged devotees at the temple. The youth was handed over to the police.

During questioning, he did not provide any reason for the attack.

“We have subjected him to a medical examination to ascertain his mental status. We are trying to find the reason behind the attack,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Thirtharaju.
