An argument between a couple ended tragically when the wife died after she was allegedly set ablaze by her husband in their house in Talaghattapura on Tuesday night.

The deceased, identified as Arpita (20), had been married to Prasanna about three years ago. Both of them hailed from Mandya.

Quoting neighbours, police said the couple argued frequently and on Tuesday night too, a similar argument took place. However, Prasanna grew furious and allegedly doused his wife in kerosene before setting her ablaze.

Police said neighbours heard shouts from the house and rushed there. They found Arpita trying to put out the fire and immediately the neighbours tried to douse the flames and rushed her to a hospital. However, she succumbed to the injuries a few hours later.

In her statement to the Talaghattapura police, she said her husband had been demanding money from her family to secure a house on lease. However, according to the statement, she had refused to get him the money as her family had already given him a dowry when they got married, and this led to the argument.

The police have registered a case against Prasanna, who is absconding.
