A 30-year-old woman pepper-sprayed a gang of six who tried to rob her on Friday night.

The woman, hailing from Jharkhand, had taken a bus from J.P. Nagar to J.B. Nagar. After alighting from the bus at around 8.30 p.m., she took an auto rickshaw to her house in Vigyan Nagar.

The driver stopped the vehicle in an isolated area in Byappanahalli police station limits on the pretext of relieving himself. The woman suddenly found herself surrounded by muggers, who groped her and took away her gold chain and bangles.

After she got over the initial shock of being attacked, she grabbed the pepper spray from her bag and used it on the muggers. When the muggers were momentarily blinded by the spray, the victim seized the opportunity and ran away.

The Byappanahalli police said that the victim managed to run home but left behind her handbag containing Rs. 20,000 in cash, credit and debit cards and a few important documents.

While the police have obtained some clues about the accused, including the autorickshaw driver.

A case of dacoity and molestation has been registered, the police said.
