A 24-year-old software engineer had a narrow escape from being attacked and robbed by four men, who tried to barge into her apartment in Whitefield area on Tuesday night.
A native of Orissa, Neelima was staying alone in a third floor apartment of a seven-storeyed building in Nagondanahalli in Whitefield.
On Tuesday night, she was dropped home by her friend at 11.30 p.m. The duo, however, did not notice that they were being followed by a gang. After her friend dropped her and left, Neelima reached her apartment and while she was unlocking the door, the gang pounced on her.
Neelima, however, managed to ward them off physically and get through the door of her house, thrusting her purse in the hands of the assailants, she told the police. One among them even tried to enter the house, but she managed to push him out and locked the door before raising an alarm.
Called up police
She also called up her friend and the police control room while continuing to scream for help from inside the house. Soon, the neighbours in the apartment rushed to her help following which the intruders took to their heels. But, the neighbours chased them and caught two of them.
Minutes later, Neelima’s friend and Hoysala police patrol also reached the scene. Soon, the two other accused, who had escaped with Neelima’s purse, were also nabbed by the police and her friend.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused Murali (24), Manjunath (25), Kaveri (23) and Ganesh (23) are construction labourers and were working in an apartment under construction in Nagondanahalli.
‘Saw her withdrawing cash’
“We believe their motive was robbery as they had seen her withdraw about Rs 4,000 from the ATM near the apartment a few minutes ago. But had they gained entry into her house, we can’t rule out any possibility,” the police said.
