If you were at the Bangalore Comic Con 2013 on Saturday then you would have seen favourites like Suppandi, Shikari Shambu, SpongeBob, Patrick Star, the Justice League, Ninja Turtles and other characters come alive. Thousands of comic aficionados gathered to grab merchandise, interact with experts in the field and witness the launch of new comics.

After the tremendous response at Comic Con Express last year, Comic Con India, the event organisers, decided to hold a two-day annual Comic Convention in Bangalore at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium, National Games Village. Fans couldn’t be happier as they arrived in costume — from Supergirl to gaming character Mario, the Joker to Harry Potter.

Interactive sessions

Sessions with biggies in the field such as Amar Chitra Katha, Hachette India, Random House India, Lion Comic, HarperCollins and Scholastic India were a part of the event. The first day saw mega launches by HolyCow Entertainment, a special session with Tinkle Digest, launch of Tinkle Tall Tales and a session with author Jerry Pinto.

Medha Lakshmi, a visitor, said: “The event was something different from the usual: you don’t get to see such events in Bangalore.”

Quirky slogans

Even those not too much into comics were there to pick up fun merchandise. Stalls such as Lazyninja and Hysteria saw a mad rush because of the quirky T-shirts, badges and key chains: ‘That’s my spot’, ‘I’m not insane, my mother had me tested’, ‘Hadouken’ and ‘How you doin’?’ were some of the slogans. The bobbleheads and action figures were popular among the children and adults alike.

Indian twists to international comics saw a mad rush at stalls such as Wear Your Opinion and Takila Shop for the sheer range of tees — Rajini style, Ramu kaka ki chai, Bob maar le, Subjiwala and more.
