After several missed deadlines, the city’s long wait for water from the Cauvery IV Stage, II Phase will end on Friday. For, the trial run will begin between Shiva balancing reservoir and T.K. Halli reservoir. The dry run of the motors at the three pumping stations commenced a few days ago.
The newly added areas, to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), comprising the erstwhile seven CMCs (City Municipal Councils) and one TMC (Town Municipal Council), are set receive water from the new phase. Narayan, Chief Engineer (Cauvery project), Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), told The Hindu during the trial run, raw water (straight from the river) from the Shiva balancing reservoir will be let (naturally, instead of being pumped) into the huge pipelines laid for the project.
The water from the reservoir will pass through a 700-metre open canal and thence into the 3,000 mm diameter (3 metre) pipeline. This pipeline runs for 6.3 km, after which it splits into two branches. The first (1,900 mm diameter) is connected to the existing Stage IV Phase 1 pipeline. The second, 2,600 mm diameter, will be deployed the II Phase, which runs 9.5 km to reach the T.K. Halli reservoir.
Once commissioned, from here the water will be treated and pumped to the city through the Harohalli and Tataguni reservoirs.
Phase I of the IV Stage was commissioned in 2002. Phase II is expected to augment the city’s current 900 mld (million litres daily) supply with an additional 500 mld, with about 250 mld of water being pumped initially.
The date for the actual supply of water from the newly commissioned phase is likely to be announced on Friday.
