‘We hope attendance picks up next week’

July 31, 2014 12:55 am | Updated 12:55 am IST - BANGALORE:

Classes 1 to 4 resumed on Wednesday at the school at Marathahalli where a six-year-old girl was raped.

Block Education Officer, South Range 4, S.M. Ramesh said that an average of 71 per cent attendance was reported in classes 1 to 10 on Wednesday.

“We are hoping that the attendance picks up and stabilises next week,” he said.

A parent, who has been following the case, said the only way parents could feel reassured was if the management changed.

Another parent urged the school authorities to issue a statement and clarify what happened on the premises. Meanwhile, the city police, who did a U-turn by announcing the arrest of two gym instructors — Lal Giri and Wasim Pasha — after stating that they had arrested the culprit, Mohammed Mustafa, are now trying to find corroborative evidence against the instructors.

A special team from the city police has been questioning the two suspects. The Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi on Tuesday said the two confessed to the crime.

The police claim CCTV footage and school records establish that the two were present at the scene of the crime.
